Kathmandu: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is on an official visit to Nepal from September 4 to 7, 2025, at the invitation of Chief Justice of Nepal Prakash Man Singh Raut.
The Embassy of India in Kathmandu announced on X: “Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Shri Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, is on an official visit to Nepal from 4-7 September 2025 at the invitation of Rt. Hon’ble Chief Justice of Nepal, Mr. Prakash Man Singh Raut.”
During his visit, CJI Gavai addressed Nepal’s judicial and legal community at the ‘India-Nepal Judicial Dialogue’, focusing on the evolving role of the judiciary, recent jurisprudence, and judicial sector reforms.
In April 2025, the Supreme Courts of India and Nepal signed an MoU to strengthen judicial cooperation. The first meeting of the Joint Working Group established between the two apex courts was also held during CJI Gavai’s visit. The trip underscores ongoing efforts to enhance judicial ties and reform initiatives between the two nations.
The visit follows Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s two-day trip to Nepal in August 2025, during which he delivered a formal invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli for a visit to India. Misri, visiting at the invitation of Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, met President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister Oli, and Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, conveying greetings from Indian leadership and reviewing progress in bilateral cooperation.
The Indian and Nepali Foreign Secretaries held extensive discussions on ongoing initiatives and explored opportunities for further collaboration, potentially forming part of PM Oli’s forthcoming visit to India. The Embassy noted that “Nepal is a priority partner under India’s Neighbourhood First policy,” and highlighted that the visit strengthened regular high-level exchanges.
During his trip, Misri also met Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel and handed over defence stores and equipment, including Light Strike Vehicles (LSVs), critical care medical equipment, and military animals. Both sides expressed satisfaction with progress in areas such as physical and digital connectivity, defence and security, and energy cooperation.
In addition, the Foreign Secretary met with other senior political leaders of Nepal, reinforcing the breadth of bilateral engagement.
