LG Sinha Inaugurates International Conference on Nanotechnology for Better Living at University of Kashmir
SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the inaugural session of the International Conference on “Nanotechnology for Better Living (NBL-2025)” at the University of Kashmir. The five-day mega event, organized by the University of Kashmir in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, brings together leading scientists and researchers to showcase recent advancements in nanotechnology and its applications for sustainable living.
In his keynote address, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the transformative impact of nanoscience and nanotechnology across multiple sectors. “Today, developments in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are reshaping industries, healthcare, and the environment. Cutting-edge research will address critical global challenges, and every area of socio-economic development now bears the signature of nanotechnology,” he said.
The Lieutenant Governor urged scientists and experts to form a dedicated group to develop an Advanced Early Warning System for flash floods, leveraging sensitive and accurate nanotechnology-based sensors. He emphasized the need for soil sensors designed specifically for the Himalayan region, which could detect changes in soil saturation to provide early warnings for landslides, potentially preventing loss of life and property.

“Considering the challenges posed by climate change, we must also focus on creating nanomaterials that reduce pollution in chemical manufacturing. These innovations could be game changers for disaster prevention in the Himalayan region,” he added.
LG Sinha further called on nanotechnology experts to contribute to the defense sector, particularly in manufacturing lighter components of defense equipment, strengthening the nation’s self-reliance campaign. He also stressed the importance of incentivizing talent in nanotechnology within academic institutions.
“Our priority should be to harness nanotechnology for the benefit of humanity. From nanoscale transistors to nanoparticles, nanomaterials, and nanoscale additives in energy, environment, food, agriculture, and electronics, these innovations will play a crucial role in improving human welfare. We aim to ensure that the benefits of these technologies reach the common citizen,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
On the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor also released the abstract book of the five-day conference.
The inaugural session was attended by Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan; Dean Academics, BRIC-InStem, Bangalore, Prof. Praveen K. Vemula; eminent scientist from IIT Kanpur, Prof. Ashok Kumar; Head of the Department of Nanotechnology, University of Kashmir, and Organizing Chair of the Conference, Prof. Rabia Hamid; along with scientists, researchers, and heads of educational institutions.
