SRINAGAR: Two unidentified terrorists were killed and three soldiers injured during an encounter in Kulgam district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday, officials said.

Security forces launched a search operation in the Gudar forest area of Kulgam following intelligence reports about the presence of militants, the officials added. The search escalated into a gunfight when the terrorists opened fire on the security personnel.

“Based on specific intelligence provided by JKP, a joint search operation was launched by the Indian Army, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and CRPF in Gudar forest, Kulgam,” the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said in a post on X. “Vigilant troops observed suspicious activity and, upon being challenged, terrorists opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire during which one terrorist was neutralized and a junior commissioned officer was injured.”

The Army later confirmed that another terrorist was killed during the ongoing operation, bringing the total militant casualties to two. “One more terrorist has been eliminated in the ongoing operation at Gudar forest. One soldier sustained injuries and is being evacuated for medical care. The identities of the terrorists are being ascertained,” the statement added.

The operation is still underway.
