Jammu: A man wanted in a rash driving case was arrested by police in Rajouri district on Monday shortly after returning from abroad, officials said.

The accused, identified as Mumtaz Ahmed of Thanamandi, had been evading arrest since a 2022 incident in the district.

“Police Station Thanamandi has arrested Mumtaz Ahmed, who was on the run in connection with a case under Section 279 IPC (rash driving), Section 304-A IPC (causing death by rash driving), Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act (driving without third-party insurance), and Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act (penalty),” a police spokesperson said.

The case had been chargesheeted against him, but Mumtaz Ahmed fled to Saudi Arabia before proceedings could continue. Subsequently, the court issued warrants under Section 299 IPC against him on November 11, 2022.

“Proclamation proceedings were also initiated, and details of his immovable properties were obtained for possible attachment under the law,” the spokesperson added. Realizing that his assets could be seized, the accused returned from abroad.

Police promptly took him into custody, and he has now been produced before the court for further legal proceedings.

“Rajouri Police remains committed to ensuring that absconding accused in criminal cases are brought to justice and that the due process of law is followed to its conclusion,” the spokesperson said.
