Jammu: Amid one of the most severe natural disasters in recent memory, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday called for collective action to protect “Mother Earth” and stressed the importance of fostering environmental awareness across all levels of society.

Addressing the foundation day ceremony of the University of Jammu, the LG said, “Our youth must lead development that meets societal needs without compromising ecosystems, while optimising resources through modern innovation. We need a multi-dimensional approach to make the Earth better for future generations.”

He added, “It is our shared responsibility to safeguard Mother Earth and cultivate a culture of environmental consciousness throughout society.”

The Jammu region has recently faced multiple rain-triggered flash floods and landslides, resulting in significant loss of life and extensive damage to crops and infrastructure. “Natural disasters are affecting the entire world today. Jammu and Kashmir have witnessed massive destruction and loss of lives,” the LG noted, assuring that the central government is committed to restoring normalcy and ensuring proper rehabilitation for affected communities.

Highlighting the role of students, he urged the University administration, once road connectivity is fully restored, to deploy student groups and form volunteer teams to assist the district administration in relief and rehabilitation efforts for families impacted by the calamities.

The Lieutenant Governor also felicitated the University’s alumni, encouraging them to contribute to its growth. He referred to the NIRF-2025 rankings of UT universities, urging a critical evaluation to establish new benchmarks and goals.
