NEW DELHI: India has issued a travel advisory for its citizens in view of escalating unrest in Nepal, urging them to exercise extreme caution and defer all travel to the country until normalcy returns. The advisory follows violent anti-government protests that have claimed at least 19 young lives and led to the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli.

Expressing “deep concern” over the volatile situation, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) appealed to all political actors in Nepal to maintain restraint and resolve differences through peaceful dialogue. “We are closely monitoring developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” the MEA said.

Highlighting India’s role as a “close friend and neighbour,” the ministry called for calm in the face of growing street violence and political instability. It advised Indian citizens currently in Nepal to remain indoors, avoid crowded places, and strictly follow local safety advisories.

The MEA also issued emergency contact numbers for assistance:

  • +977–980 860 2881 (WhatsApp-enabled)
  • +977–981 032 6134 (WhatsApp-enabled)

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is coordinating with local authorities to monitor the situation and will provide regular updates.

The advisory comes amid indefinite curfews imposed in Kathmandu and other major cities after mass demonstrations—dubbed the “Gen Z uprising”—against corruption, nepotism, and elite privilege. India has also cautioned against possible regional spillover of the crisis and urged Indian nationals to adhere strictly to instructions issued by Nepali authorities.
