JAMMU: To promote mental health awareness and highlight suicide prevention, the Psychological Counseling Cell of Government College of Education Jammu organized a special seminar on World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10.
The event was held under the guidance of the college Principal, Dr. Jyoti Parihar, who commended the initiative and emphasized the institution’s commitment to providing counseling services and mental health support for students. She noted that education goes beyond academics, focusing also on building resilience, empathy, and a strong support network.
Dr. Ambica Kumari, Head of the Department of Psychology and Convenor of the Psychological Counseling Cell, served as the resource person. She stressed the importance of recognizing warning signs and fostering a supportive community. “Mental health should be a priority, not a taboo. Together, we can create a safe space where everyone feels heard and supported,” she said. “Your life matters. You are not alone. If you ever feel overwhelmed, know that there are people—friends, teachers, or professional counselors—who care and are ready to listen. Suicide prevention is not just a one-day observance; it requires continuous awareness, education, empathy, and action.”
The seminar, held in the college auditorium, included expert talks, student testimonials, and interactive sessions designed to educate participants on early intervention, emotional support, and destigmatizing mental health issues. The event concluded with a pledge ceremony, where attendees committed to being mental health allies.
Faculty members present at the seminar included Dr. Rajinder Kour, Prof. Anuradha Choudhary, Dr. Sushma Bala, Dr. Shubhra Jamwal, Dr. Shalini Sharma, Dr. Rakesh Bharti, Dr. Shallu Jasrotia, Prof. Roopa Kumari, Prof. Kiran Thappa, and Dr. Sonam Gandotra.
