Jakarta: Heavy rains have caused floods that killed at least 19 people and left 10 others missing on Bali Island and in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia.

Gusti Ayu Ketut Wijayanti, spokesperson for Bali’s National Search and Rescue Agency, told Xinhua on Thursday that flash floods have claimed 13 lives and left six people missing on the island. The floods, accompanied by 18 landslides, affected multiple areas.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency reported rainfall of up to 150 millimeters in parts of Bali between Tuesday and Wednesday, warning that heavy rain is likely to continue throughout the week.

In East Nusa Tenggara, flooding damaged homes and farmland, forcing residents to move to higher ground. Gasper Losa Manisa, head of the provincial Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency’s emergency unit, said six people have died and four remain missing, with rescue efforts ongoing.

Indonesia’s rainy season typically lasts from November to April and often brings floods, landslides, and related health risks. Experts say climate change has intensified rainfall and prolonged the season in recent years, leading to more severe disasters.
