NEW DELHI: Retail inflation in August rose modestly to 2.07%, up from 1.61% in July, driven largely by higher prices for vegetables, meat, and fish, according to government data released on Friday (September 12, 2025).

The consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation stood at 3.65% in August 2024. On a year-on-year basis, inflation in August 2025 compared with August 2024 was recorded at -0.69%, the National Statistics Office (NSO) reported.

“Rises in headline and food inflation during August 2025 are mainly due to increases in the prices of vegetables, meat and fish, oils and fats, personal care products, and eggs,” the NSO said.

The Reserve Bank of India has been tasked by the government to maintain inflation at 4%, with a tolerance range of ±2%.
