JAMMU: The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) has stepped up its enforcement drive against violations of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 across Jammu and Kashmir.

In recent actions, the LMD Samba Unit imposed fines of ₹50,000 on four violators for non-compliance. The Deputy Controller Enforcement Jammu also penalized a packed-beverages manufacturer ₹50,000 for failing to provide mandatory declarations. Likewise, the Kupwara Unit recovered ₹50,000 from a company for withholding statutory information and for not registering under Rule 27 of the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011.

The Department has warned all manufacturers, packers, and traders to strictly adhere to mandatory labeling requirements such as Maximum Retail Price (MRP), net quantity, and Unit Sale Price (USP). It emphasized that lapses mislead consumers, amount to unfair trade practices, and will invite stern action.

Reiterating the Department’s resolve, Controller Legal Metrology J&K, Rajinder Singh Tara, said the LMD is committed to safeguarding consumer rights and will continue to take strict action to ensure consumers’ right to information is upheld.
