Doda/Jammu: Normal life remained disrupted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district for the fifth straight day on Saturday following the detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), officials said.
Malik, who heads AAP’s J&K unit, was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly disturbing public order. His arrest triggered widespread protests and clashes, forcing authorities to impose prohibitory orders and suspend mobile internet as well as broadband services.
Although a two-hour relaxation was allowed on Friday evening and passed off peacefully, police and paramilitary forces were again seen patrolling deserted streets on Saturday morning, instructing shopkeepers to keep their establishments closed.
Officials said several people detained during the protests were released on personal bonds, but security forces continue to maintain a tight vigil in sensitive areas.
The district witnessed violent clashes until Wednesday, as protesters defied restrictions. Security forces resorted to baton charges at multiple locations, leaving eight police personnel — including a deputy superintendent and a station house officer — injured.
All schools in the district have been ordered shut by the chief education officer until Sunday.
Meanwhile, residents have urged authorities to lift the curbs so daily life can resume. “We want the administration to allow free movement immediately. Earlier, heavy rains had already kept students away from schools and disrupted life, and now these restrictions have added to our problems,” said Mohammad Shaban, a local.
