Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for building a strong bridge of trust between the people of Manipur’s Hills and Valley.
Addressing a public gathering at Kangla Fort in Imphal during his first visit to the state since the ethnic violence between Kukis and Meiteis in May 2023, Modi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to “healing wounds, restoring confidence, and ensuring no family is left behind.”
“Manipur is the ‘ratna’ adorning the crown of mother India. Any form of violence here is condemnable. It is not only unfortunate but also a grave injustice to our ancestors and future generations. Together, we must steer Manipur towards peace and development,” he said.
Noting the demographic divide, the PM highlighted that while the Meitei community resides in the Imphal Valley, the Kukis live in the surrounding Hills. He stressed that lasting peace in the state is non-negotiable and can only be achieved through dialogue and unity.
“Manipur has immense potential, but violence erodes our social fabric. Only peace and harmony can restore the state’s rightful place as India’s eastern crown jewel,” Modi added.
The Prime Minister announced that the Centre had approved the construction of 7,000 new houses for those affected by the conflict, along with a special relief package of around Rs 3,000 crore. “Restoring normalcy in the lives of those who endured violence is our top priority,” he said.
During the function, Modi inaugurated 17 development projects worth Rs 1,200 crore, noting that Manipur’s growth trajectory had accelerated under his government. “Before 2014, the state’s growth rate was less than 1%. Today, Manipur is advancing rapidly. The 21st century belongs to the East, to the Northeast, and the Centre has consistently prioritised Manipur’s development,” he said.
Recalling history, Modi said Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had described Manipur as the gateway to India’s Independence. “This land witnessed the INA unfurl the tricolour for the first time and has given countless martyrs to the nation. Our government moves forward inspired by their sacrifice,” he said.
Highlighting women’s empowerment as a key tradition, Modi cited the all-women market, Ima Keithel, as a shining example. “Mothers and sisters here have always driven the economy. I consider women’s power the engine of India’s development and self-reliance, and Manipur embodies this spirit,” he said.
Modi also lauded the contribution of Manipuri soldiers to national security, stating, “In India’s successful Operation Sindoor, the valiant sons of Manipur played a crucial role.”
He added that the government is working to ease citizens’ lives by reducing GST on essential items and services, which would lower the cost of cement, food, and hotel stays, while boosting local businesses such as taxis, dhabas, and guest houses.
The visit comes amid criticism from opposition parties over his absence in the violence-hit state, which saw 260 deaths and thousands displaced. Addressing this, Modi emphasized the government’s steadfast support for Manipur’s people.
“Manipur has a rich heritage spanning thousands of years, with deep cultural roots. We are committed to ensuring its peace and stability and strengthening its image as a land of progress and development,” he concluded.
