Div Com Chairs Airfield Environment Management Committee Meeting
SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Anshul Garg, who also chairs the Airfield Environment Management Committee, stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among stakeholders to ensure aerospace safety around the airfield.
He made these remarks while presiding over a high-level committee meeting today.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioners of Budgam, Anantnag, and Pulwama; Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC); Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station Srinagar; Director Urban Local Bodies; ADC Srinagar; and officials from the Airport Authority, Pollution Control Board, Irrigation & Flood Control, and Rural Development Department.
Div Com issued a series of directions to strengthen airfield safety, focusing on visibility, bird hazards, stray dog menace, and carcass disposal near the airport.
To improve air quality and visibility for aircraft, he ordered the closure of unlicensed brick kilns within an 8-km radius of the airfield and directed the operational kilns to adopt the zigzag technique to reduce emissions.
Addressing bird hazards, particularly Black Kites drawn to open garbage dumps, he instructed Deputy Commissioners, the SMC Commissioner, and the Director of Urban Local Bodies to adopt scientific waste management practices. Special focus was laid on villages flagged by airfield authorities. He further stressed proper disposal of waste from slaughterhouses and butcher shops.
On tackling the stray dog menace, the SMC was directed to prioritize sterilization drives around the airfield. Garg also called for public awareness campaigns to ensure safe disposal of animal carcasses by local residents.
He urged officials to pool resources under centrally sponsored schemes and work in coordination across departments to effectively mitigate the identified challenges.
Earlier, the Committee Secretary presented a detailed PowerPoint highlighting key safety concerns impacting the airfield environment.
