Wireless Sets to be Revived for Vaishno Devi Yatra Communication Network

Jammu: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) will reintroduce wireless sets to strengthen communication along the pilgrimage track, as the yatra resumes on Sunday after a 19-day suspension caused by last month’s landslide, officials said.

The decision was taken during a joint meeting chaired by SMVDSB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sachin Kumar Vaishya to review preparedness for the Shardiya Navratras, scheduled from September 22 to October 1. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the shrine board, police, CRPF, Army, civil administration, fire and emergency services, and other allied agencies.

Highlighting the expected surge of pilgrims during Navratras, Vaishya stressed coordinated efforts across all stakeholders. He directed measures for disaster management, including firefighting arrangements, simulation exercises, and enhanced crowd control. SDRF personnel were instructed to work with the Shrine Board’s Disaster Management Task Force to monitor vulnerable areas.

Additional steps include installing more signage, holding joint patrols, designating holding areas, and improving public announcements. Essential rescue tools such as gas cutters are to be stationed across sectors, while the revival of wireless sets will boost communication and coordination. The use of the Integrated Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring was also underscored.

The CEO reiterated mandatory RFID cards for pilgrims, with extra scanners and staff to enforce the system. Verification of pithoo and ponywalas will also be tightened to prevent impersonation.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Katra was tasked with identifying additional holding areas in case of yatra suspension due to adverse weather. Instructions were also issued to improve sanitation, drinking water supply, illumination of dark spots, and regulate vehicular movement in Katra.

Officials said security arrangements will include a multi-tier grid involving police, CRPF, paramilitary forces, and quick response teams to manage the large influx of devotees.

The yatra was suspended on August 26 after a landslide claimed 34 lives and injured 20.
