Dehradun: Cloudburst in Sahastradhara Triggers Floods in Karligaad, Rescue Ops Launched

Dehradun: A cloudburst in the Sahastradhara region late Monday night triggered heavy flooding in the Karligaad rivulet, causing widespread destruction in the surrounding areas.

The incessant downpour swelled the stream dangerously, sweeping away properties, collapsing a key bridge, and damaging dozens of shops along its banks. Two hotels also collapsed under the force of the floodwaters, initial reports said.

District Magistrate Savin Bansal immediately took charge of the situation, directing coordinated rescue and relief operations. Teams from the SDRF, NDRF, PWD, and other emergency services were pressed into action overnight with JCB machines and rescue equipment. Residents living near the stream were swiftly evacuated to safer locations.

Officials confirmed that two people remain missing, with search operations underway. The administration has put all departments on high alert and is conducting relief work under the Incident Response System (IRS) protocol. SDM Kumkum Joshi was deployed to the site to oversee operations through the night.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety advisories.

The administration’s rapid response aims to minimise losses and ensure the safety of affected families. Locating the missing individuals and providing relief to victims remain top priorities.

In a similar incident last month, a cloudburst in Chamoli’s Mopata village damaged homes and cattle sheds, leaving two people missing and over a dozen livestock feared buried.
