Shimla: The monsoon onslaught in Himachal Pradesh has left over 1,500 families homeless since June 20, with the state recording an average rainfall of 1,010.9 mm—46% above the normal 692.1 mm.
The Himalayan region has witnessed 46 cloudbursts, 98 flash floods, and 145 major landslides. So far, 417 people have died, including 231 in rain-related incidents and 181 in road accidents. Around 477 individuals have sustained injuries, and 45 remain missing.
Data from the State Emergency Operation Centre shows that 1,502 houses were completely destroyed, while 6,503 suffered partial damage. The state has incurred losses amounting to ₹4,582 crore.
The Public Works Department bore the brunt with losses of ₹2,803 crore, followed by the Jal Shakti Department at ₹1,405 crore.
Frequent natural disasters have made life in the hill state precarious, leaving residents anxious as they strive to restore normalcy.
On Tuesday evening, 655 roads—including sections of three National Highways—were closed, and 924 power transformers along with 243 water supply schemes were disrupted.
