Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat on Wednesday visited Tharad village along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Udhampur district to review restoration works, officials said.

The visit came a day after Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari chaired a high-level meeting to assess the highway’s status, which has remained closed for heavy vehicles following last month’s heavy rains and flash floods.

DGP Prabhat, accompanied by Inspector General (IG) of Traffic Police Suleman Choudhary, inspected the Tharad stretch and reviewed traffic movement, they said.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has faced criticism for failing to properly widen and level a 300-metre stretch at Tharad after the existing highway was buried under debris. Officials said the poor condition of this portion is severely hampering smooth traffic flow.
