NIT Srinagar launches Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign

Srinagar: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Wednesday launched the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 campaign under the nationwide cleanliness initiative inspired by Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB).

The event, inaugurated near the Main Building fountain, was attended by In-charge Director Prof. Roohi Naaz, Registrar Prof. Atikur Rahman, Dean Students’ Welfare Prof. Mohammad Abid Bazaz, Dean Alumni and International Affairs Prof. M.A. Shah, and SHS 2025 Nodal Officer Dr. Ashok Kumar. Students, faculty, staff, along with NSS and NCC cadets and EBSB volunteers, also participated.

Participants took the Swachhata Pledge, committing 100 hours annually (two hours weekly) to cleanliness drives, discouraging littering, and motivating others to join the mission.

Prof. Roohi Naaz emphasized that cleanliness reflects dedication to nation-building, adding, “Our youth have the power to transform society through consistent action.”

Registrar Prof. Atikur Rahman highlighted the role of institutions in shaping civic responsibility, while Prof. Abid Bazaz described SHS 2025 as a platform for students to “engage, innovate, and lead by example.”

Prof. M.A. Shah said the campaign is about fostering healthy habits and community values, and Dr. Ashok Kumar underlined its alignment with Viksit Bharat 2047, turning awareness into tangible action.

Led by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) and the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the nationwide campaign runs from September 17 to October 2. It targets neglected spaces like garbage dumps, railway stations, and village areas, while encouraging reduction of plastic waste.

At NIT Srinagar, the 15-day drive will include campus clean-up activities in hostels, laboratories, and academic blocks, along with awareness sessions on waste segregation and sustainable practices.
