Shenzhen: Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Li-Ning China Masters 2025, overcoming Thailand’s World No. 6 Pornpawee Chochuwong in the Round of 16.

Sindhu secured a straight-games victory, 21-15, 21-15, in 41 minutes at the Shenzhen Arena.

The Indian star had begun her campaign at the tournament with a convincing win over Denmark’s Dawall Jakobsen in the first round on Tuesday, defeating her 21-5, 21-10 in just 27 minutes, according to ESPN.

This tournament is particularly significant for Sindhu, who has endured a challenging season with six first-round exits on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour.

She dominated the match against Chochuwong from the start, racing to a commanding lead and taking the first game in just over 10 minutes. The momentum carried into the second game, which Sindhu wrapped up in 17 minutes, marking her third win over Jakobsen.

The veteran shuttler will be hoping to relive past glories in China, recalling her China Open triumph in 2016. Her best results this year include quarterfinal finishes at the India Open and the BWF World Championships.

On the men’s side, Ayush Shetty faced a narrow first-round exit against sixth-seeded Chou Tien Chen, losing 19-21, 21-12, 16-21. Despite taking the match to a decider, Shetty could not close it out.

Ayush remains the only Indian to have captured a BWF World Tour title this year, having won the US Open in June by defeating Canada’s Brian Yang in the final.

The Li-Ning China Masters 2025 will continue until September 21.
