Ramban: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a man in connection with the alleged killing of a woman and her two children in the Banihal area of Ramban district, in a case reportedly linked to an illicit relationship.
The incident, now referred to as the Banihal triple murder, came to light following the arrest of Anil Kumar, a resident of West Champaran in Bihar.
According to officials, the accused allegedly murdered 30-year-old Dhanmati Devi and her two minor children, who were residents of East Champaran, Bihar. Their bodies were recovered on September 8 from beneath a culvert along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH) in the Rattanbass area of Banihal.
The discovery of the bodies sent shockwaves through the region, prompting the Jammu and Kashmir Police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by SDPO Banihal, Manjeet Singh, to probe the case.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban, Arun Gupta, stated during a press briefing that the SIT employed a combination of human intelligence, technical surveillance, and scientific analysis to identify and trace the suspect.
Police said the breakthrough came when the accused’s location was traced to Mir Bazar in the Qazigund area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir. A police team was dispatched, leading to the arrest of Anil Kumar.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the killings. Police indicated that the motive appeared to stem from an illicit relationship between the accused and the deceased woman.
The investigation is being closely monitored by SSP Ramban Arun Gupta and the Additional Superintendent of Police, Ramban. Further inquiries are underway to establish the precise sequence of events and collect additional evidence related to the alleged crime.
