In a major policy move aimed at improving the academic environment and reducing digital distractions, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a complete ban on mobile phone use by both students and teachers during school hours. The directive, issued on Friday by the Directorate of School Education, applies to all government schools across the state.
Under the new order, students are strictly prohibited from bringing mobile phones to school. For teachers, the ban is intended to ensure focused teaching and meaningful interaction with students. Educators are required to deposit their mobile devices in the staff room or a designated secure area under CCTV surveillance before entering classrooms. This decision responds to growing concerns over the adverse effects of excessive mobile phone use, which have been identified as a significant source of distraction for both students and teachers.
The Department of Education explained that the ban addresses multiple issues, ranging from academic underperformance to mental and physical health concerns. Officials noted that constant phone use can lead to psychological problems such as anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, and social isolation, as well as physical issues including eye strain, hearing problems, and a sedentary lifestyle.
To ensure effective communication during emergencies, schools have been instructed to maintain a functional landline and share its number with parents and guardians. This ensures that essential communication remains uninterrupted without compromising the new policy.
The successful implementation of the ban will rely on the cooperation of all stakeholders and will be closely monitored by deputy directors of education. Schools are also required to display the new rules prominently on their notice boards. With this initiative, Himachal Pradesh joins a growing number of regions worldwide taking steps to reclaim classrooms from digital distractions.
