Dhaka [Bangladesh]: Bangladesh is witnessing a sharp spike in dengue infections, with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reporting nine new deaths and 740 hospitalisations in the past 24 hours — the highest single-day figures of the year, BDNews24 reported.
Since January 2025, the country has recorded 179 dengue-related deaths and 40,461 hospitalisations. Sunday’s figures include three fatalities from Saturday, raising the 24-hour death toll to nine. The previous daily high was reported on September 11, when six people died of the mosquito-borne disease.
The latest deaths occurred at several hospitals: three at Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital, two at Kurmitola General Hospital, two at Barguna Patharghata Upazila Health Complex, and others in Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Chattogram. Among the deceased were six men and six women, aged between 24 and 65, according to BDNews24.
September has turned into the deadliest month so far, with 57 fatalities — surpassing the earlier peak of 41 deaths in July. The month-wise tally also includes 10 deaths in January, three in February, seven in April, three in May, 19 in June, and 39 in August. No deaths were recorded in March.
Hospital admissions mirror this alarming rise. In July, 10,684 patients were admitted, followed by 10,496 in August. This month alone has seen 10,355 admissions. Of the 740 new cases in the past 24 hours, 239 were reported from Dhaka’s two city corporations, while the rest came from Barishal (166), Dhaka Division outside the capital (145), Chattogram (77), Khulna (52), Rajshahi (28), Mymensingh (22), Sylhet (8), and Rangpur (3).
Currently, 2,021 dengue patients remain hospitalised across the country — 756 in Dhaka and 1,265 in other districts. Relief and healthcare workers continue efforts to treat and monitor cases nationwide.
Bangladesh has been tracking dengue cases since 2000. The worst outbreak occurred in 2023, when 321,179 people were hospitalised and 1,705 died. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant as the country battles one of its most severe dengue seasons in recent years.
