Over 20,000 Water Quality Tests Conducted Across 2,645 Villages During J&K Flood Relief Campaign

SRINAGAR: A 15-day intensive campaign to prevent waterborne diseases and strengthen water quality testing in flood- and landslide-affected areas of Jammu & Kashmir concluded today.

Launched on 4th September 2025, the campaign aimed to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases following the devastating floods in several districts of the Union Territory. It demonstrates the Jal Jeevan Mission under the Jal Shakti Department’s commitment to restoring water supply infrastructure and improving service delivery to citizens.

Key Highlights of the Campaign:

Water Quality Testing: A total of 20,493 water quality tests were conducted across 2,645 villages, including 8,127 tests in flood- and landslide-affected areas. District and sub-divisional lab staff of Public Health Engineering Divisions carried out intensive testing at both source and consumer points, with at least three tests in each affected village.

Community Engagement: Local communities, along with health, education, and RDD departments, played a critical role in testing water in schools, Anganwadi Centres (AWCs), and health institutions. On-spot testing and awareness sessions were conducted in 6,486 schools and 1,940 AWCs, while 5,945 AWCs in affected areas were also covered, including 2,563 centres focused on water safety activities.

Restoration of Water Supply: 2,205 water supply schemes were restored, ensuring the provision of safe drinking water to affected populations.

Awareness Campaigns: To reach a wider audience, 880 audio jingles and messages were broadcast across all 11 FM and Akashvani stations. Additionally, 44 announcement vehicles conducted awareness activities in 2,255 villages across affected districts.

The campaign has significantly contributed to ensuring safe drinking water, restoring damaged water supply systems, and raising public awareness to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases in flood-hit areas.

The Mission Directorate, JJM, Jal Shakti Department, remains committed to sustaining this momentum and ensuring uninterrupted access to safe drinking water for every household under ongoing and future initiatives.
