Eight NIT Srinagar Faculty Named in Stanford’s World Top 2% Scientists List 2025

Srinagar: Eight faculty members from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar have been featured in the prestigious World’s Top 2% Scientists List 2025, compiled annually by Stanford University, USA. The ranking is regarded as one of the most credible indicators of global research excellence and academic influence.

Those who secured a place in the list include Prof. M.F. Wani (Mechanical Engineering), Prof. M.A. Shah (Physics), Prof. Bashir Ahmed Mir (Civil Engineering), Dr. Neeraj Gupta (Electrical Engineering), Dr. Vijay Kumar (Physics), Dr. Sandeep Samantaray (Civil Engineering), Dr. Pravan Kumar Katiyar (Metallurgical & Materials Engineering), and Dr. Sandeep Rathee.

The ranking is based on the Updated Science-Wide Author Databases of Standardized Citation Indicators, developed by a team led by Prof. John P.A. Ioannidis at Stanford University. The latest version (Version 8), released on 19 September 2025, uses data updated to August 1, 2025, from Scopus and covers citation records until the end of 2024.

Scientists are evaluated on multiple parameters, including citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted h-index, career-long impact, and single-year performance. The database also factors in self-citations, retracted papers (via the Retraction Watch database), and provides field-specific percentiles across 22 broad scientific domains and 174 subfields.

Congratulating the faculty, NIT Srinagar Director Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia said, “Featuring in the World’s Top 2% Scientists list is a matter of immense pride for NIT Srinagar. This recognition not only reflects the individual excellence of our faculty but also enhances the institute’s global academic and research standing.”

Registrar NIT Srinagar, Prof. Atikur Rehman, also praised the achievement, describing it as a reflection of the institute’s academic vibrancy. “The inclusion of eight of our faculty members in this global ranking underscores the strength of our research ecosystem. It will inspire students, research scholars, and young faculty to innovate and excel,” he said.

The rankings, jointly conducted by Stanford University and Elsevier, feature two categories: single-year impact, which highlights research contributions in a specific year, and career-long impact, which evaluates a scientist’s work across their academic journey.
