SRINAGAR: The Cabinet on Wednesday recommended to the Lieutenant Governor that the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly be convened on October 13.

Sources said the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and attended by all ministers, took place this morning. During the session, the Cabinet decided to formally suggest that the Assembly meet on October 13.

“The upcoming session is expected to be brief, likely spanning seven days from October 13 to 20,” sources added.

Under the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, no more than six months may elapse between the last sitting of one Assembly session and the first sitting of the next. The Act states:
“The Lieutenant Governor shall, from time to time, summon the Legislative Assembly to meet at such time and place as he thinks fit, but six months shall not intervene between its last sitting in one session and the date appointed for its first sitting in the next session.”

Since the previous session concluded on April 29, the next session must be held by October 28 to comply with the law.

The forthcoming Assembly proceedings are expected to focus on issues of statehood and reservation. During the last session, three resolutions on statehood lapsed after disruptions caused by the National Conference, which had opposed an adjournment motion related to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Reservation matters also featured prominently in House discussions, with People’s Conference President and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone sharply criticizing the government on the issue.
