U.S. government agencies will now have access to Meta Platforms’ artificial intelligence system, Llama, according to a senior administration official, as the Trump administration moves to integrate commercial AI tools into federal operations.

The General Services Administration (GSA), the government’s procurement arm, will add Llama to its list of approved AI tools for federal use, Josh Gruenbaum, GSA’s procurement lead, told reporters ahead of the announcement.

With this approval, agencies can experiment with Llama—a free tool—confident that it meets the government’s legal and security standards. Llama is a large language model capable of processing text, video, images, and audio.

In recent months, GSA has also approved AI tools from Meta’s competitors, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI. These companies have agreed to offer their paid products at significant discounts while adhering to federal security requirements.

“It’s not about currying favor,” Gruenbaum said when asked whether tech executives were offering discounts to gain President Trump’s approval. “It’s about recognizing how we can work together to make this country the best it can be.”

Federal agencies will be able to use Llama to accelerate contract reviews, troubleshoot IT issues, and support other operational tasks.
