Ladakh: Hanle-Chumar Road Opens to Public, Boosting Connectivity and Tourism
The Hanle-Chumar road in Ladakh has been opened to the public, marking a major milestone in strategic infrastructure development.
Built under Project Himank by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the 91 km stretch links Hanle with the border village of Chumar. The route traverses altitudes ranging from 14,500 to 17,200 feet, including the challenging Salsa La Pass.
According to the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI), the road will significantly enhance border connectivity for the Armed Forces, improving operational readiness while also facilitating civilian movement. It will provide access to key attractions such as the Hanle Observatory, Kyun Tso Lake, Chilling Tso Lake, and Tso Moriri, giving a boost to local tourism.
The project stands as a testament to engineering excellence in extreme high-altitude terrain and reflects India’s commitment to strengthening border infrastructure. Beyond its strategic importance, the road is expected to invigorate Ladakh’s tourism industry and drive socio-economic growth in remote areas.
