NEW YORK: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for stronger solidarity among Global South nations, a renewed commitment to multilateralism, and a united push to reform the United Nations and other global institutions.

He made these remarks during a High-Level Meeting of like-minded Global South countries on Tuesday, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In a post on X, Jaishankar noted that amid a growing range of global challenges and risks, “it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.”

Outlining a structured framework for the Global South’s engagement in global affairs, the minister proposed five key measures to enhance the collective voice and influence of developing nations.

He stressed the need to leverage existing forums to strengthen consultations among Global South countries, with the goal of “enhancing solidarity and encouraging collaboration.”

Jaishankar also advocated for comprehensive reforms of the UN and multilateral institutions more broadly.

Highlighting the unique strengths and experiences of the Global South, he said developing nations should bring their achievements—such as vaccines, digital capabilities, educational expertise, agricultural practices, and SME development—to the international stage for the benefit of all.

On global challenges, he emphasized that the Global South should pursue initiatives reflecting its own priorities, particularly in areas like climate action and climate justice, rather than simply following the lead of the Global North.

He further underscored the importance of active participation in discussions on emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, to ensure developing nations remain competitive in the evolving global order.

India has consistently championed the voice of the Global South in international forums, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that developing countries play a meaningful role in shaping the global agenda.
