Colombo: Seven Buddhist monks, including an Indian national, were killed and six others injured when a cable-operated rail cart overturned at a forest monastery in northwestern Sri Lanka, police reported on Thursday.

The accident took place Wednesday night at Na Uyana Aranya Senasanaya, a prominent Buddhist monastery in Nikaweratiya, approximately 125 km from Colombo. The monastery, renowned for its meditation retreats, attracts practitioners from across the globe.

Police confirmed that among the seven deceased monks were nationals from India, Russia, and Romania. Of the six injured, four are in critical condition.
