Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said his party, the National Conference (NC), will decide who will contest the upcoming elections for the four vacant Rajya Sabha seats from the Union Territory.
The Election Commission (EC) announced on Wednesday that the biennial elections to fill the four Rajya Sabha seats, vacant since 2021, will be held on October 24.
“There are four seats. We will decide how many we will contest and how many we will leave for others,” Abdullah told reporters during his visit to the flood-affected Mahore sub-division in Reasi district.
When asked about speculation that NC president Farooq Abdullah and former minister Sajjad Kitchloo might contest the Rajya Sabha elections, he said, “You can name anyone you like, but it is the party that will make the decision. As far as I know, no such discussions have taken place in the National Conference.”
Abdullah also highlighted the extensive damage caused by recent flash floods across Jammu and Kashmir. “In some areas, entire mountains have collapsed, destroying numerous houses. In others, homes have been washed away and agricultural land severely damaged,” he said.
He added that he had met with flood victims and assured them that the government would provide all possible assistance.
