New Delhi: The Government of India has issued a notification assigning the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) the responsibility of granting equivalence to Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) certificates awarded by various School Education Boards across India.

This move aims to streamline admissions to higher education institutions and employment under the Central Government, State Governments, and Union Territories.

According to the Ministry of Education, the notification was published in the e-Gazette on 6th September 2025 by the Department of School Education and Literacy. It supersedes the earlier notification dated 15th November 2021, which had designated the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for this role.

NCERT will carry out this responsibility through the National Assessment Centre, Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), established under the National Education Policy 2020. This framework ensures that equivalence determinations are conducted through a robust, academically rigorous process, upholding the highest educational standards.

The system applies to all Central and State Government-recognized school boards, as well as private Indian boards established under parliamentary or state legislation, executive orders, or statutory bodies. Certificates granted equivalence by NCERT will automatically establish inter-board parity across India, facilitating smooth student transitions between school education boards nationwide.
