Srinagar: PDP MLA Waheed Para on Sunday accused the Jammu and Kashmir government of showing minimal interest in resolving the reservation issue, alleging that the ruling party is “focused solely on safeguarding its vote bank.”

Under the current reservation policy, implemented after the abrogation of Article 370, only 30% of vacancies are reserved for the general category, which makes up nearly 70% of the population.

“CM @OmarAbdullah’s Education and Social Welfare Minister recently stated in an interview that the law department had raised queries on the reservation policy report, and that the cabinet would review it again before sending it back. This, however, is merely an attempt to deflect responsibility,” Para said on X.

The Pulwama legislator emphasized that the issue could be resolved through a straightforward order by the Social Welfare Department.

“While our youth face an outright blockade of their aspirations, the minister has the full authority to amend the policy. Yet, the government appears disinterested, focusing only on preserving select vote banks,” he added.

In December last year, the Omar Abdullah-led government formed a cabinet sub-committee to examine grievances regarding the existing reservation rules. After the sub-committee submitted its report in June, the cabinet referred it to the Law Department for further scrutiny.
