Kathmandu: Authorities on Sunday reported that over 7,700 inmates who escaped from prisons across Nepal during the Gen Z protests have been either recaptured or returned to their respective detention centers.
During the protests on September 8 and 9, a total of 14,558 prisoners had fled from jails nationwide, according to the Prison Management Department.
Ten prisoners died in clashes with security forces, while 7,735 have since been returned to prison. Some surrendered voluntarily, whereas others were apprehended by authorities.
However, 6,813 inmates remain at large, and the government has launched an ongoing operation to apprehend them.
