New Delhi: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday emphasized the need for preparedness against biological threats and radiological contamination from nuclear weapons.
Speaking at the Scientific Session marking the 100th Raising Day of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt., Gen Chauhan noted that bio-threats are likely to rise in the post-COVID era and stressed the importance of defense readiness.
“The world has experienced immense challenges during the COVID pandemic. Bio-threats, whether man-made, accidental, or natural, are expected to increase in the future,” he said. “Defending against such threats and treating affected individuals requires specialized protocols, and we must be prepared.”
Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on nuclear threats, the CDS underlined the importance of training for radiological contamination. “Post Operation Sindoor, our Prime Minister has stated that India will not be deterred by nuclear blackmail. While the likelihood of nuclear weapon use is low, it is prudent to include this in our security planning. Preparedness against nuclear threats also strengthens deterrence,” Gen Chauhan added.
The CDS also praised the Military Nursing Service for its vital contributions under challenging conditions. He emphasized the importance of emotional and psychological well-being for nurses.
“MNS has completed 100 years of selfless service to the nation. From frontlines of conflict and makeshift hospitals to naval ships and humanitarian missions, your dedication brings comfort to the wounded, solace to the distressed, and hope to the hopeless,” he said. “Nurses are the heartbeat of healthcare, offering not just care but hope and compassion. We must also focus on the well-being of those who heal.”
Gen Chauhan called for greater “jointness” within the Indian Armed Forces, noting that MNS is unique in enabling personnel to serve seamlessly across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Established in 1926, the Military Nursing Service has grown into a vital and indispensable part of the Indian Armed Forces.
