UGC Declares 54 State Private Universities as Defaulters
New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared at least 54 state private universities as defaulters for failing to submit mandatory information under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, and for not making required disclosures on their websites, officials said.
The UGC stated that despite multiple reminders via e-mails and online meetings, these universities did not provide the detailed information needed for inspection, along with supporting documents attested by the registrar.
“They were also instructed to upload the completed format and appendices on their websites, providing a direct link on the homepage so that the information is accessible to students and the public. Several reminders were issued through e-mails and online meetings,” UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said.
According to UGC guidelines on public self-disclosure, higher education institutions must maintain functional websites that provide information to all stakeholders. The disclosed information should be easily accessible on the homepage without requiring registration or login, and a search facility should be available for easy navigation.
Madhya Pradesh led the list of defaulters with 10 universities, followed by Gujarat (8), Sikkim (5), and Uttarakhand (4). The UGC has circulated the list of defaulting institutions and warned them to take corrective action immediately, cautioning that further measures could follow if the directives are ignored.
In recent months, the regulator has intensified monitoring of private universities. In July, it had issued warnings to 23 institutions for failing to appoint ombudspersons.
