Jammu: Senior BJP leader and former Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) mayor Chander Mohan Gupta, along with nine others, has been booked in connection with alleged embezzlement at a private cow shelter, a senior lawyer said on Tuesday.

According to the lawyer, the accused face charges of stealing 13 cows and 24 calves, as well as misappropriating ₹97 lakh from Hare Krishna Gaushala located at Top Sher Khania in Jammu.

The case was registered under various sections of the BNS, following intimation by Bakshi Nagar SHO to the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (Munsiff), Jammu Rekha Sharma. The SHO, who was already facing contempt proceedings for not registering the case earlier despite court directions, informed that the investigation is now being carried out by ASI Ashok Kumar.

The matter originated from a complaint filed by Rohit Bali, General Secretary of Hare Krishna Gaushala Charitable Trust, who alleged theft of 37 bovines and large-scale financial irregularities. After repeated attempts to get a case registered failed last year, Bali approached the court.

In February, the court directed police to investigate the matter. However, with no FIR registered, Bali filed a contempt petition against the SHO on June 6.
