Indian missions worldwide commemorated Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary on Thursday, celebrating his enduring message of peace, non-violence, and social justice.
Gandhi Jayanti not only honours Gandhi’s lifelong dedication to truth and ethical living but is also observed globally as the International Day of Non-Violence, spreading his ideals across nations.
In New Zealand, the Indian High Commission marked the occasion with speeches reflecting on Gandhi’s teachings and their relevance today. High Commissioner Neeta Bhushan welcomed guests, including prominent New Zealand public figures of Indian origin, Members of Parliament Anand Satyanand and Paramjeet Parmar, Indian community leaders, and friends of India.
In Japan, R. Madhu Sudan, Charge d’Affaires, along with Team India, Edogawa City officials, members of the Indian diaspora, teachers, and students, paid floral tributes at the Gandhi statue in Edogawa, honoring his timeless message of peace and non-violence.
In Nepal, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava felicitated the embassy’s sanitation workers in celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, acknowledging their contribution to the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2025’ initiative. “Floral tributes were offered by the Ambassador and Embassy officials, while students and teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya Kathmandu sang hymns cherished by Mahatma Gandhi, reflecting his ideals,” the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu shared on X.
The University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby also observed Gandhi Jayanti, with Indian High Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, Vice Chancellor Ian Findlay, and faculty paying tribute to the Father of the Nation.
In Australia, S. Janakiraman, Consul General of India in Sydney, paid floral respects at Gandhi’s statue in Jubilee Park, Parramatta, joined by Indian-origin Labour Councillor Sameer Pandey and members of the Indian community. In Perth, Indian Consul General Naresh Kumar participated in an event organised by Ahimsa Australia, promoting Gandhi’s principle of non-violence.
In Brazil, Indian Consul General Hansraj Singh Verma and Consulate officials conducted a cleanliness drive at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Praca Tulio Fontoura, Paraiso, as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign. “This initiative is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a Clean India – Green India, inspiring everyone to contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment,” the Consulate General in Sao Paulo posted on X.
