NEW DELHI: India has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza show significant progress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday.

Referring to reports of a potential release of Israeli hostages by Hamas, Modi described the development as an important step toward restoring peace in the region.

He tweeted on X, “India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”

Trump has directed Israel to halt airstrikes on the Gaza Strip after Hamas indicated its willingness to accept certain elements of his plan to end the nearly two-year conflict and secure the release of all remaining hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attack.

Hamas stated it is prepared to release the hostages and transfer authority to other Palestinian groups, while noting that other aspects of the plan will require further discussions among Palestinians.
