New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against a key accused in the Chandigarh Sector 10 grenade attack, orchestrated by the foreign-based terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

Abhijot Singh, also known as Babba or Gopi, a resident of Punjab, was arrested in April this year for his role in the attack. He has now been named in a supplementary chargesheet submitted to the Special NIA Court in Chandigarh.

The attack, aimed at a retired Punjab Police officer, was part of a broader conspiracy to instill fear in society. The plot was reportedly masterminded by Pakistan-based BKI operative Harwinder Singh, alias Rinda, in coordination with US-based gangster Happy Passia.

NIA investigations indicate that Passia was responsible for recruiting operatives, providing funding, and supplying weapons and explosives to India-based members of the group. Both Rinda and Passia had been chargesheeted as absconders last March, alongside arrested suspects Rohan Masih and Vishal Masih. During the probe, Abhijot Singh was identified as a co-conspirator, leading to his arrest.

Further investigations revealed that in December 2023, Abhijot travelled to Armenia, where he connected with Shamsher Shera, a member of Passia’s terror network, and was recruited into the gang. Upon returning to India in mid-2024, he conducted a reconnaissance of the target in July and, along with Rohan Masih, attempted to assassinate the retired officer in August 2024, funded by BKI handlers abroad.

The grenade attack was ultimately carried out by Rohan and Vishal in September 2024.

The NIA continues to pursue other accused individuals and associates who provided logistical support and terror-related materials to the operatives involved in the conspiracy.
