New Delhi: In a move to promote digital payments and curb cash transactions, the government on Saturday announced that from November 15, vehicles entering National Highway toll plazas without a valid or functional FASTag will be charged 1.25 times the regular toll if they choose to pay via UPI.
At present, non-FASTag users are required to pay double the toll amount in cash.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Government of India has amended the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 to incentivise digital payments and reduce cash handling at toll plazas.
“Under the new rule, vehicles entering a fee plaza without a valid FASTag will be charged double the toll if payment is made in cash. However, users who pay through Unified Payment Interface (UPI) will be required to pay only 1.25 times the regular toll applicable to their vehicle category,” the statement said.
The notification will take effect from November 15, 2025.
The ministry added that the revised rules aim to encourage digital payment adoption, enhance transparency in toll collection, and improve the overall user experience on National Highways.
