‘Know Your Artisan’ Campaign to Launch on Oct 11, Celebrating Living Heritage and Promoting Brand ‘Soulful Kashmir’
SRINAGAR: The Handicrafts and Handloom Department is set to celebrate the region’s rich artisanal legacy with the launch of the ‘Know Your Artisan’ campaign. This immersive initiative, a key part of promoting the brand ‘Soulful Kashmir’, offers the public a unique chance to engage directly with the masters behind Kashmir’s world-renowned crafts.
A Department spokesperson announced that the campaign events are scheduled for October 11, 25, and 30 at iconic Srinagar locations: Jhelum Riverfront, Clock Tower, Lal Chowk, and Heritage Bridge Rajbagh. “In a rare opportunity to bridge tradition and community, national award-winning artisans and weavers will step out of their workshops to share personal stories, reveal the intricate techniques behind their crafts, and interact with visitors and tourists,” the spokesperson said.
The campaign will also highlight 15 GI-registered crafts that define Kashmiri excellence, including the mesmerizing patterns of carpet weaving, the luxurious warmth of Pashmina and Kani weaving, the delicate finesse of Papier mâché, the sculptural beauty of walnut wood carving, and the grandeur of Khatamband ceilings. “Visitors will also discover the crucial role of QR coding in verifying authenticity, ensuring that every piece carries the true mark of Kashmiri heritage,” he added.
Further enhancing the festivities, the spokesperson noted that the events will showcase Srinagar’s prestigious recognition as a World Craft City and a member of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network, a distinction highlighting the city’s unparalleled contribution to global craftsmanship.
The Department will also host special student interaction sessions with legendary craftsmen, inspiring the next generation to preserve and innovate within these traditional arts. Visitors can experience live demonstrations—from the rhythmic weaving of Pashmina on looms to the precise artistry of walnut carving—offering an up-close view of how these iconic Kashmiri handicrafts are created.
The ‘Know Your Artisan’ series is free and open to all, promising a day of cultural immersion, storytelling, and discovery.
