Windows 10 Support Ending This Month: What Indian PC Users Should Know

Windows 10 support is ending this month, leaving millions of PC users in India with two main options: either pay for updates to continue using Windows 10 or upgrade to a new Windows 11 PC. Microsoft acknowledges that this transition could be disruptive, leaving users vulnerable if they continue running unsupported systems.

However, Microsoft’s options for users are limited, and most require spending money to maintain access to updates. That said, the company has some methods that allow users to get Windows 10 updates for free—though, as always, there’s a catch.

How Free Windows 10 Updates Work

Microsoft recently detailed the changes as support for Windows 10 officially ends. Through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, regular users can get an additional year of support for $30 (around ₹2,550). Exact pricing in India is not yet confirmed.

Microsoft also offers a free route to updates: users can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points or back up all their data using the Windows Backup cloud app. “Once you select an option and follow the on-screen steps, your PC will automatically be enrolled. ESU coverage for personal devices runs from October 15, 2025, through October 13, 2026,” said Microsoft chief Yusuf Mehdi.

To earn 1,000 Microsoft Reward points, users need a Microsoft account and must actively use Bing searches, shop at the Microsoft Store, play Xbox games, or complete other tasks. While simple in theory, accumulating 1,000 points may require significant activity, especially with the October 2025 deadline approaching.

Many users still rely heavily on Windows 10, which prompted Microsoft to adjust its earlier plans. Buying a new Windows 11 PC, especially with modern hardware, can be expensive. Paying a small fee for extended Windows 10 support allows users to continue using their current systems until upgrading becomes more practical.
