Beijing: Rescue operations were in full swing on Sunday in the remote Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest, where a blizzard has stranded nearly 1,000 people in campsites on the mountain’s eastern side. Hundreds of villagers and rescue personnel have been mobilized to clear thick snow blocking access to the high-altitude area, located more than 4,900 metres above sea level.

According to local media reports cited by the BBC, some tourists have already been rescued. Heavy snowfall, which began on Friday evening, has continued to intensify across the eastern slopes of Mount Everest in Tibet—a popular destination for climbers and trekkers.

In neighbouring Nepal, relentless rains have triggered landslides and flash floods, claiming at least 52 lives.

Mount Everest, known as Mount Qomolangma in China, stands as the world’s tallest peak at 8,849 metres.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Matmo—the 21st named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season—made landfall on Sunday along the eastern coast of Xuwen County in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province.

Ahead of the storm’s arrival, local authorities evacuated about 347,000 people from Guangdong and Hainan provinces. Typhoon Matmo was packing maximum wind speeds of up to 151 kmph.
