WhatsApp Tests Username Feature to Hide Mobile Numbers and Boost Privacy
WhatsApp is exploring a new way for users to hide their mobile numbers and stop random messages by introducing usernames. The messaging app may soon allow users to reserve unique usernames that others can use to contact them, reducing the need to share phone numbers. This approach is reminiscent of BlackBerry’s BB ID system from years ago.
Currently, the feature is being tested in WhatsApp’s Android beta and is expected to roll out to all users in the coming months.
WhatsApp Reserve Username: What It Means
The new feature was spotted by WaBetaInfo, which shared details and a screenshot showing how usernames will work. In the profile settings, users will see a ‘reserve username’ option. According to the tipster, usernames will initially be available to select users. Once a mobile number is hidden, only people who know your username will be able to message you, preventing random messages from strangers.
Similar to how email addresses are personalized, WhatsApp will likely let users reserve usernames before someone else takes them.
How Usernames Improve Privacy
Usernames can include letters, numbers, and special characters. WhatsApp will block usernames containing “www” to prevent users from impersonating websites or platforms. Each username will also come with a unique key that can be shared with friends and trusted contacts, ensuring your inbox isn’t flooded with messages from unknown users or scammers.
This move is a significant step toward reducing unsolicited messages. However, with Meta integrating AI into its ecosystem, concerns remain about how WhatsApp might leverage user data to personalize ads starting December this year.
WhatsApp still offers end-to-end encryption for messages and calls—a feature that competitors like India’s Arattai by Zoho currently do not fully support. Still, the introduction of AI-driven features could change the platform’s user experience, especially if advertisements become intrusive.
