Jammu: A notorious drug peddler was detained under the stringent PIT-NDPS Act, while four others were arrested with heroin across Rajouri, Samba, and Udhampur districts on Tuesday, police said.
Shoib Akhter, a resident of Draj village in Kotranka, was taken into custody under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act and lodged in Jammu jail, a police spokesperson stated. Akhter, reportedly involved in multiple drug peddling cases, was detained following orders from competent authorities to curb his illegal activities.
During a vehicle check at the new bus stand in Salani, Rajouri, a drug peddler was arrested with six grams of heroin. In Udhampur’s Jakhani area, two others from Kupwara district, North Kashmir, were apprehended with 6.48 grams of heroin in their vehicle. Another peddler was arrested in Samba’s Ramgarh area with 5.39 grams of heroin.
The spokesperson added that all four were booked under the NDPS Act, and further investigations are underway to trace their networks.
In a separate development, an absconder was apprehended in Lakhanpur, Kathua, after a three-year search. Rajinder Choudhary, a resident of R.S. Pura, Jammu, was wanted in a bovine smuggling case registered in 2022. A warrant had been issued against him by the Court of Special Mobile Magistrate, Kathua, in April.
