Srinagar: Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Cooperative and Election Departments, Javid Ahmad Dar, inaugurated the SARAS Mela at Sher-e-Kashmir Park, Srinagar, showcasing a vibrant display of crafts and products created by rural women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from across the country.
The event was attended by MD JKRLM Dr. Shubhra Sharma, Additional Mission Director JKRLM Kashmir Mohammad Imran Khan, General Manager J&K Bank Rakesh Magotra, and representatives from NABARD and Grameen Bank.
In his address, the Minister highlighted that the SARAS Mela serves as an important platform for rural women entrepreneurs to display their talents, build market connections, and enhance livelihood opportunities. He noted that such initiatives reflect the Government’s commitment to empowering SHGs and promoting rural entrepreneurship as a cornerstone of inclusive economic growth.
The Minister further announced that J&K Bank has sanctioned ₹100 crore to 2,673 SHGs, marking a major boost for self-employment and women-led enterprises in rural areas.
During the event, the Minister also visited various stalls, interacted with artisans, and commended their creativity and entrepreneurial zeal.
Organised by the J&K Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM) under the Department of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, the 11-day Mela features over 200 SHG women from 13 States, along with stalls from all districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The fair presents a rich assortment of handicrafts, handloom items, and traditional cuisines—celebrating India’s cultural diversity and the entrepreneurial strength of rural women.
The event also includes workshops aimed at strengthening the marketing and business acumen of SHG members.
The SARAS Mela will remain open to the public till October 14, from 10 AM to 7 PM daily, with free entry for visitors.
