New Delhi: As global anticipation builds ahead of Friday’s announcement of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, US President Donald Trump took a sharp jab at former President Barack Obama, who had received the prestigious award just months into his first term in 2009.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump claimed he had achieved historic peace milestones but insisted he did not do it for recognition.
“I don’t know what they’re going to do, really, but I know this: Nobody in history has ended eight wars in nine months. I’ve stopped eight wars. That’s never happened before,” he said. “But whatever they decide is fine. I didn’t do it for that — I did it to save lives.”
Trump also criticized Obama’s Nobel win, saying, “He got a prize for doing nothing. He got elected, and they gave it to him for absolutely nothing — except destroying our country. Obama was not a good President.”
This year’s Peace Prize has sparked intense speculation, with Trump reportedly among the frontrunners after being nominated by several countries, including Israel, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Thailand, Armenia, and Cambodia — all crediting him for mediating long-standing conflicts.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the 2025 laureate at 11:00 a.m. (0900 GMT) on Friday at the Nobel Institute in Oslo.
A total of 338 nominations — including 244 individuals and 94 organizations — have been received for this year’s award.
The five-member Nobel Committee, chaired by human rights advocate Jørgen Watne Frydnes, includes foreign policy scholar Asle Toje, former acting Prime Minister Anne Enger, former Education Minister Kristin Clemet, and former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Gry Larsen.
