New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a CBI probe and systemic reforms in India’s drug safety framework following the deaths of several children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, allegedly due to toxic cough syrups.
A bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and K. Vinod Chandran rejected the plea filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objected to its maintainability.
Mehta told the court that the petitioner “reads something in the newspaper and immediately rushes to file petitions,” adding that state governments, including Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, were already taking the issue seriously and had appropriate enforcement mechanisms in place.
Although the bench initially considered issuing a notice, it later decided against it. When asked about the number of PILs he had filed, Tiwari informed the court he had submitted eight to ten so far.
“Dismissed,” Chief Justice Gavai said while rejecting the petition.
