New Delhi: A commanding unbeaten partnership of 162 runs between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan powered India to 220/1 at tea on Day 1 of the second and final Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.

At the end of the second session, India stood firmly on 220/1 in 58 overs, with Jaiswal (111)* and Sudarshan (71)* unbeaten at the crease. The pair added 126 runs in the post-lunch session without losing a wicket, dominating the West Indies attack.

Resuming the afternoon session at 94/1 in 28 overs, Jaiswal (40*) and Sudarshan (16*) quickly shifted gears. Jaiswal brought up India’s 100-run mark with a boundary in the 29th over and completed his half-century in style off Jayden Seales’ bowling.

Sudarshan followed suit, reaching his second Test fifty after a patient 87-ball knock, as India crossed 150 in the 41st over and 200 in the 51st.

Earlier, after electing to bat, openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a solid start, cautiously negotiating the new ball before accelerating. India’s first runs came through a double by Rahul off Phillips in the second over, while Jaiswal opened his account in the next over against Seales.

Rahul looked fluent, hitting a couple of back-to-back boundaries in the ninth over, but fell to Jomel Warrican for 38 (54) after being stumped with the score at 58/1. Warrican was the only wicket-taker in the morning session, finishing with figures of 1/21 in six overs, including a maiden.

Sudarshan then joined Jaiswal and the duo steadied the innings with poise, denying the visitors any further breakthrough.

Brief Scores: India 220/1 in 58 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 111*, Sai Sudarshan 71*; Jomel Warrican 1/21) vs West Indies.
