Rana calls for rejuvenation, protection of traditional water bodies

SRINAGAR: Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, on Saturday chaired a comprehensive review meeting to assess the progress of ongoing water supply projects in Anantnag, Kulgam, and Pulwama districts.

The meeting aimed to evaluate field-level implementation, identify challenges, and accelerate the pace of work to ensure reliable drinking water supply across South Kashmir. It was attended by the Chief Engineer, senior officers of the Jal Shakti Department, and district-level officials from the concerned areas.

Reviewing the progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), Rana reaffirmed the Omar Abdullah-led government’s commitment to providing safe and clean drinking water to every household. He emphasized robust monitoring, effective execution, and adherence to timelines to meet the mission’s objectives.

The Minister stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and quality assurance, directing officials to strengthen service delivery, address public grievances promptly, and work towards improved citizen satisfaction.

Highlighting the importance of sustainable water management, Rana called for scientific and technology-driven methods to conserve water, reduce wastage, and protect natural sources for future generations.

He urged greater community participation in water conservation, stating, “It is our moral duty to use water judiciously and adopt eco-friendly lifestyles to mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure a sustainable future.”

Rana issued directions for the rejuvenation and protection of traditional water bodies — including ponds, springs, streams, and wetlands — noting that such efforts enhance water availability and strengthen local ecosystems.

He also called for the convergence of schemes under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Jal Shakti Abhiyan, and related programmes to optimize resources and improve project outcomes.

Appreciating the efforts of the district administrations of Anantnag, Kulgam, and Pulwama, Rana commended the progress achieved and urged officials to maintain momentum while addressing on-ground challenges.

Reiterating the government’s full support, he said the goal remains to make Jammu and Kashmir a water-secure region with universal access to safe and sustainable drinking water.
